Vienna’s Nutley Street Drainage Project Begins

A new construction project to replace an underground culvert along Nutley Street near Marshall
Road in the Town of Vienna is set to begin Monday, Feb. 23, 2026. The work is expected to
take nearly a year to complete.

The project will be divided into five phases, with the first phase involving the temporary removal
of the center median at the southwest entrance to town, resulting in the temporary closure of
one northbound lane of Nutley Street SW. This phase is expected to last until March 2026. The
other four phases will immediately follow. Drivers are encouraged to consider alternate routes
as these periodic lane closures will take place on weekdays between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. for the
    duration of the project.

“The existing culvert was installed in 1962 and struggles with stormwater runoff during
significant rain events,” said Deputy Public Works Director Alan Chen. “This project will
upgrade our stormwater infrastructure and reduce the town’s long-term flood risk in southwest
Vienna by appropriately channeling the increased runoff associated with past and future
    development.”

Chen said the need for culvert replacement stems from Vienna’s growing development over the
past 60 years. Open ground that used to filter water is now covered with homes and impervious
surfaces, which has contributed to an increase in stormwater runoff over time. The Nutley
Street culvert replacement project will help alleviate drainage issues in southwest Vienna by
replacing the existing undersized culvert with a dual 6’x10’ box culvert. The project is expected
to be completed by January 2027.
